WWDC18 Keynote: iOS Privacy News

WWDC2018 announced a few upcoming security features. Apple emphasized their commitment to increase user’s privacy and aims for stronger fingerprinting protection on their devices. This consists of blocking more (but not all) tracking cookies and limited sharing of your hardware information to restrict fingerprinting possibilities. This will greatly reduce the amount of information advertisers can get from your surfing habits or attempts to match your surfing sessions with your device ID.

Safari will start blocking tracking via social media extensions. These changes are a step into the right direction but is it enough to truly protect your privacy? Users still do not get full control over the new privacy features and are not able to see what information is being shared.

We clearly see that Apple wants to make security features accessible to the wider audience. However, the user still does not have a high level of control when they solely rely on Apple’s updated security features to protect their data. The announcement of limiting, reducing and restricting tracking and data collection, suggest improvement but only to a moderate amount. Users can be misled into thinking that their privacy and security is fully covered by the security updates. This false sense of security may lead them to be less cautious when handling their data, leaving them more vulnerable.

If you want all the privacy features now, check out SnowHaze. We have already included all the “new” security features disclosed and more, as we believe in giving our users a higher control over the data they share with big companies when they are online. SnowHaze blocks tracking cookies, avoids fingerprinting, spoofs device information, blocks social media buttons and much more to give you full control of the information you share.
